Rayon, viscose, faux silk, art silk, and bamboo silk are all names for fake silk. In most cases the consumer doesn’t know the difference between real silk and fake silk. This can be a problem if you are looking for the real thing.

Fake silk can look great at first but has many negative attributes regarding strength, wear, shine, etc. It seems that more and more of these fake silk rugs are coming out in droves these days because they are cheaper to make.

Not all fake silk rugs are created equal. Some are better than others. Fake silk can add a luxurious feel to your rug, especially when blended with wool.

Here are some things to consider when choosing an area rug, keeping in mind that your area rug will need to be cleaned one day!

  • Will it take a thorough cleaning?
  • Where will the rug be used? In a high traffic area or a seldom used area?
  • Do you have pets or young children?

    • Coming from a cleaning point of view, silk area rugs can be very difficult to clean when dirty and in some cases are “un-cleanable”.
